The Saturn V First State (S-IC)
The Saturn V First State (S-IC)
The S-IC first stage was responsible for launching the 6.2 million pound Apollo/Saturn V vehicle. The five F-1 engines at teh base of the S-IC propelled the spacecraft to a speed of 5,000 mph and consumed fuel at the rate of 15 tones per second. Approximately 2.5 minutes after launch. the engines cut off and the stage was jettisoned into the Atlantic Ocean.

The S0IC stage was manufactured by The Boeing Company. The four fins at its base added stability to the rocket while the conical shields under them protected the engines during travel.
